Walking trail of Poros

Walking trail of Poros

Walking trail of Poros

Poros is a small port town on the southeast coast. It doesn't get the tourist traffic that Argostoli or Fiskardo do, which is part of the appeal. The walking trail starts from the harbour and heads up into the gorge behind town.

Follow the signs from the main square. The path climbs steeply for the first twenty minutes — switchbacks through olive groves and low scrub. Don't rush it. The gorge narrows and the vegetation thickens until you're walking under a canopy of plane trees and wild figs. There's usually water in the stream bed through spring, dry by August.

About halfway up, the trail levels off and you get a clear view back down to Poros harbour and across to Ithaca. This is where most people turn around, and that's fine — the return takes less time since it's downhill.

If you want to keep going, the path connects to the old donkey trail that runs to Tzanata. That adds another hour each way and the footing gets rough. Bring proper shoes, not flip-flops. I've seen people try it in sandals. It doesn't end well.

Distance: 3 km one way (to the viewpoint), 7 km to Tzanata
Difficulty: Moderate — steep in places, uneven ground
Bring: Water, sun hat, decent shoes. No shade on the upper section.
